My Story - Donal’s Apiary
I grew up on a rural Leitrim farm and have always been interested in nature and sustainability.
I began with two hives in 2017. Since then, I have learned a lot by completing many beekeeping courses and training. I have used this knowledge to create a harmonious balance between honey production and preservation of natural habitats.
I practice sustainable beekeeping techniques such as providing ample space for the bees to thrive, using natural remedies to combat pests and diseases, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals that could harm the bees or contaminate the honey. I also prioritise the conservation of native bees and local flora in addition to planting bee-friendly flowers and encouraging biodiversity in their surroundings.
With my rewilding, I encourage native trees and wildflowers to flourish where our bees forage. This means that the honey is made from the nectar of local flowers, giving it a unique flavour that reflects the local flora.
I prioritise the well-being of the bees in my apiary. I ensure their hives are warm and well ventilated reducing the workload of the bees while they work their magic. On our eight acres, I carefully choose the optimum location for their hives ensuring that they are situated in areas abundant with diverse and healthy flora. I employ gentle methods that minimise stress on the bees, such as using bee-friendly extraction techniques that allow the bees to stay calm and undisturbed.
By choosing sustainable local honey, you not only support the health of our local environment but also contribute to the preservation of our precious pollinators. Bees play a crucial role in the pollination of plants, helps to maintain the balance of ecosystems. So, when you enjoy a jar of our sustainable, local honey, you're not only savouring a delicious and natural treat but also making a positive impact on our environment.
